Thank you to @scbwi for featuring my work on the homepage this month! ☺️💛✨ This illo always gives me warm feelings as it’s from my first dummy book that eventually led to my first author/illustrated picture book “Found You” with Alison Green Books. The SCBWI has been a wonderful support for me, especially living overseas from the US and being able to connect with the absolutely wonderful Germany/Austria chapter. If you’re starting on your writing or illustrating journey in kids books you should def check out SCBWI...if only even to connect with lovely likeminded book crazy people.

For this book and for much of my work, I start with a base layer of pastel (usually pan pastel but sometimes schmincke). I thought you’d like to see how it all starts...this is drawing the pastel over very light pencil lines. I’ll erase and redraw as much as needed in this step before moving on to adding color pencil or gouache or moving to digital. #wip #behindthescenes #workinprogress .

Hi friends 😊 I’m like the “pokey puppy” on this...in the spirit of things though, this is a low pressure way of making new work and sharing it, and meeting other illustrators. All really great things 🤗🤗 ✨We’re all so busy these days that it can be hard to make time for personal work. And there’s so much pressure to post content, that we often feel forced to work quickly. We founded PortfolioClub as an antidote to these pressures. It’s a low-commitment challenge, just one piece, once a month...something you can take your time with.

✨How it works: We’ll post an assignment on the first day of every month. You post your final on the last day of the month. Follow #PortfolioClub to get updates, and use the hashtag so that everyone can see your piece. Feel free to post wips and sneak peaks throughout the month too. Easy peasy.

✨Each themed assignment will be developed by one or two art/illustration professionals. Many will tackle different markets, so you can jump in or out from month-to-month as inspiration strikes.
