About Devon
picture book author, illustrator and Designer.
Devon creates art and stories from her particular way of interpreting the world and the unlimited magic she sees in it.
Devon’s work is like a secret treehouse where everyone is invited
Devon likes to shine daily life through a lens that’s a bit magical while leaning towards themes of friendship, connection, and appreciating the present moment. She also likes to draw actual treehouses.
There’s play and curiosity and also the mysterious cloud of childhood nostalgia, along with nature, animals, and small children having adventures & doing funny everyday things.
Devon hopes people of all ages can be transported for moments of delight and wonder when engaging with her work, and that kids will see themselves in relatable characters, imaginative art and stories that start conversations. She hopes kids will realize they can tell stories of their own as well!
From childhood construction paper books of her dog’s naughty & nice traits…
Devon grew up in Panama in the 80’s sporting khaki shorts, a rainbow belt and red orthopedic shoes. The jungle was her backyard, along with huge mango trees, sweet ginger plants, beetles bigger than her hands, and tiny marmosets who would visit for snacks. Her dad left his art supplies in reach and her mom taught her how to fill in color and corrected her Spanish. Devon drew snorkeling unicorns in first grade and became obsessed with dogs shortly afterwards. At age 10, Devon learned that cockroaches can fly and still can't draw them. She had an adventurous and also very normal childhood in Panama - surviving a forest treefall and also high school math.
Devon went to art school at Rhode Island School of Design and focused mostly on screen-printing. She lived in San Jose, California, for many years, and now calls Aachen, Germany, home along with her family including a Galgo dog and little sausage-shaped dog from Romania.
Devon used to paint murals all over the Bay Area of CA, but now happily works on a smaller scale with all kinds of materials including ink and paper collage. She enjoys book research and has learned to properly hold drumsticks and how many species of sparrow there are - 141. From her attic studio, Devon listens to blackbirds singing and can see the Netherlands in the distance. She enjoys growing things - especially elephant garlic, and she's very fond of painting doors. She doesn’t like rollercoasters, salty licorice, or getting up early, and has a tough time with German grammar but keeps trying.
Devon has won several awards and recognitions for her picture book and illustration work and is super grateful every day to keep drawing and creating.
Her inner 5 year old is quite happy.
